Hello, and welcome to thoughts by Newportben.
This is coming to you from the Newport Rhode Island area. It is a wonderful place to be at.
I am a fiftyish, divorced twice male. who has a different outlook on society than many people.
My three wonderful, now grown, children have been a great inspiration to me over the years.
The whole technology thing though scares me a little. It appears as though it has brought on
new problems in society which I would like to address at this time.
Computers do seem to serve a good purpose, both for business and personal use.
I do not understand the computer games though, and why they are so popular with younger people. Folks tell me that they are spending weekends playing computer games and I have a
hard time figuring out why, instead of them spending time with real people. The funny thing is
also that they buy sports and energy drinks to play these games !
Cell phones are at the top of the problem with society list for me.
We seem to have done fine for many years without them, and now society demands that everyone has one to communicate! I strongly disagree with that. I work at a retail store and
everyone, even teenage kids, have cell phones. They place them on the counter along with their
car keys, like it is a part of them. They have songs that play when the phones ring and treat them like their most cherished possessions! They buy cell phone cards like they are going out of style.
The problem I see is that people are on the phone when they should be concentrating on other things like driving and/or paying for what they are buying. I guess it's multitasking in a form.
My own take is that it is very impolite to be on the phone when you close to other people who are not interested in hearing your conversation, and shouldn't have to. It's hard not to hear as people tend to talk louder on cell phones due to poor reception and background noise.
If you are paying for something at a counter you should not be on the phone. Money is changing hands, pay attention- it's your money.
Texting to me is the same as being on the cell phone around other people- it shouldn't be done.
Nobody wants to watch you doing it.
As a society we are obsessed with large TV's and digital this and that, with HD.
Whatever happened to being happy just watching tv. There is a problem with society on this level.
I'm not saying these modern day products are bad, I'm just saying we use them in moderation.
Like alcohol, smoking and lottery. I'll address thses things in later blogs.
It is my humble opinion that technolgy should help us not control us.
Have a great day.
Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Benny,
It's hard to keep up with this ever-changing world hon. We can either let it consume us or try our best to go with the flow. I always try to look for the good in things. You are always a bright spot.
